Day 9 – Unscheduled Rest Day

June 29
Christiansburg to Christiansburg
0 miles

K has had a sore throat, cold, and cough since Charlottesville. She’s been a real trouper, mashing out the miles in the heat, but yesterday’s ride did her in. She sorely needs rest, so we’re spending an extra day in Christiansburg, tucked comfortably into an EconoLodge. The next few days promise more tough cycling, so it makes sense to stop and recoup, rather than risk making this cold even worse. Hopefully we’ll be back in the saddle again tomorrow morning bright and early.

Note from K: Given that I spent the day sleeping and didn’t watch Animal Planet, you all know I really am sick!

In the meantime, I (ML) have been marveling at the regional differences in what’s offered at the grocery store. The local Food Lion has an entire section (5 shelves) devoted to chewing tobacco. The frozen food selections include breaded okra and black-eyed peas. There is no organic produce whatsoever. Kinda different than the ‘ole PCC.

  1. I hope the day of rest did the trick. I'm going to think healthy thoughts for you K.

Don't take up any bad habits! We like your pearly whites and baby pink tongues.

Another hot sunny day. Our house is starting to get prepped for painting so you're not going to recognize it when you get back.

    Here's to your health!

  2. The Men's Team is proud of the Women's Team. You guys are tough and you also know when to take a break. Sounds like lovely countryside in that steep sort of way...
The Animal Planet Folks are all over the neighborhood with their satellite dish trucks. Rascal is playing it for every nickel he can. His braces aren't giving him that much trouble but he's a pill about wearing that retainer thing around his neck at night.
The fig tree is covered with fruit...maybe this will be the year. Lot's of lettuce in the garden.
Mika says woof; the floor is licked clean.
    Marley's here. We miss you.

  3. K, hope you are getting better, and thanks to both for your continuing great post; I just caught up on the last few days, after being in smoggy LA for a bit. Sounds like very pretty country; will have to drive through sometime!
Stay away from that chewin tabacco; its tough to spit into the wind for too long! Cheers, and I hope you get to see some small town fireworks somewhere; Andy

  4. Hi you troopers! What are you going to do for July 4th celebration? Remember last year's at the beach in Maine? Just gave your blogsite to Julene (Chip's scans were ok). Hiked at Jalama yesterday-it was beautiful! Keep posting your blogs-this is so much fun to "ride" along with you. Love, M&D/S&P

  5. Lady with the funk...
I'm hoping this post finds you much improved!

Bet you both never thought an Econolodge could be so sweet! MMM mm, breaded okra - makes my mouth water just thinking about it - water enough to stick that big "chaw" in my lip to simmer...

Hey all you Seattle people - I think you got the East Coast's good weather - give it back! You had all the good snow this winter - don't be greedy!

Talk to you soon and love to you both!

  6. Hi you two,
I'm going through withdrawal - no stories of the last days. I hope this is because the south is that in the wifi dark! I have to assume that biker K has recovered well and is back checking out the bubbling asphalt and the greenery.

I spent the day in Burien yesterday walking around with a lovely German urban planner and a large group of people - seeing what is really there. Dinner at an interim art site - i.e. an empty lot in the middle of town. Then an invitation to cruise around the hidden paradise of Lake Burien on the "party barge"! (a beautiful lake two blocks from downtown and closed to the public) (the barge guided by a 90 year old hand, going about 1/4 knots) with a cordial and testy exchange about "This lake should be everyone's" and "Never" going on.

The Weis-Law's and our "party kayaks" are heading out to Port Townsend. Andy first, Carolyn second. We're going to be a little more rowdy on our party vessels! And plan on going 1/2 knots.

Beautiful downtown N. 66th Street is a little less rowdy without the neighborhood bikers there to stir things up so we need to look elsewhere on the 4th to get our partying in!

Hope to see a blog soon!
    Love,
    Carolyn
