Day 56 – Waylaid in Wisdom

Aug 15
Jackson, MT to Wisdom, MT
19 miles

Yes, a mere 19 miles. First, there was a big breakfast to eat in preparation for our intended long day’s ride. Then, ML had a flat in her rear tire which required the efforts of three people to try to remove her tire from the rim. Tire changed, we layered ourselves in our minimal cold weather wear. After a bracing 19 mile ride into Wisdom (pop. 100), K was freezing despite her outfit of cut up socks and we were both hungry – again! We enjoyed a huge lunch topped off by delicious warm blackberry pie. Fortified, we returned to the elements, but after a short foray down the road in the wind and the rain, we decided it was wiser and warmer to skeedadle back to town to the safety of the Nez Perce Motel. Thirty-five miles with no services would be fine on a fair-weather day, but we weren’t comfortable without a bail-out point on a day like today. We felt vindicated when, several hours later, 5 minutes worth of heavy hail fell. At least we were able to post our backlog of days and enjoy a fine Bitterroot Brewery ale. By the time we leave tomorrow we will have eaten lunch, dinner, and breakfast at Wisdom’s only, but luckily tasty, restaurant.

  1. You're in the Men's Team's country now...Dillon, Ennis, Virginia City, Jackson...many,many days and weeks I have spent in that country including Jackson for Barb and my honeymoon. Stunning. Big, beautiful, powerful, tough, windy country and you are in the middle of it.
    Beautiful pictures.
Carry on, 2ML&K. See you soon. Take care of yourselves as you come on home...

  2. It took us two days of intense driving to get home after leaving you in West Yellowstone. I had to use a chisel to get some of the "Grand Teton Road Repair" mud off the truck and trailer. We've had many inquiries about your progress from friends and family. You'd be surprised how many people are following your blogs.
Hope you make it to Washington before the school bells start ringing and ML's boss starts looking for her.
    Great pics of your travels.

    Love, M & D / P & S

  3. Dang, my comment didn't post. Strange. And it was a good one. I can almost remember it. Late on Aug. 16, my brain and funny bone were just clicking away. . . now I am not so swift. But I have to comment because last night K said perhaps I wouldn't now that I'd actually TALKED to her! (That was exciting.)

We are down to the finish. WA state is going to look boring to you after the glory of Montana and Idaho. If only you could peddle up Hell's Canyon!

I hope these final days are a lark and WARM. As much as it will be good to have you back, I'll miss your adventure sharing. So have a few more crammed into the week and we'll settle in to hear them.

Take care on the road. See you soon!
    XO
