Day 12 – We Make Ourselves at Home in a Church

July 2
Damascus, VA to Rosedale, VA
33 miles

We decided to make today a short day for practical reasons. The scarcity of accommodations over the next 150 miles dictate that we put in either two shorter days, or one really long day. Given the steep terrain (did we mention that it’s hilly here?), we selected Door #1.

We are settled for the night at the Elk’s Garden Methodist Church, where we entered the unlocked building and read: “Welcome Bikers. Make yourselves at home. Help yourselves to food in the refrigerator. Sleep inside or outside.” We considered sleeping in the actual church (plush soft red carpet), but it didn’t quite feel right, so we’ll roll out our sleeping bags in the annex next door instead.

  1. Hey, we were worried these last couple days here in the 'hood. Not that you were having problems but that you had found a plush little B&B with a pool and a garden and had changed your plan for the next month in a big way.
Sounds like the Universe is caring for you in just the ways we had hoped. Your legs must be getting into the groove.
Rascal had his weekend full-service bath and spa treatment and has spent a lot of time outside hopping around the yard under a most curious Mika's supervision.
You got some heat coming your way. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And no limit on the popcycles.
Love from all the way across the street to all the way across the country.

  2. Ooops. Jack was signed in. The above comment was Pa's of course...
Jack is up in Bellingham with friends for the 4th. I took Marley to the "Zombie Walk" in Fremont last night and hope to take her to the fireworks tonight. Roxie's workin' the salon, Dagen doing chores, Brook and Joe getting ready for the wedding.
    Boopa's in Heaven.

  3. The 4th of July was celebrated in typical Solvang style yesterday. It started with our band's playing patriotic pieces in the park (alliteration in full flower ), followed by the lengthiest parade we've ever had. While Dad slaved away down at the Mission on Rotary events, I went to a party. We gathered with hikers later to watch the fireworks which were quite impressive this year. Did you find any celebrations or did you crash? Be careful on the roads today. And thanks again for calling to ease our minds!

  4. Hi girls on bikes! Bethie sent me your link so I've signed up to live vicariously through you and your wonderful trip! I was just in PA on business and had 4 extra days, so I was cycling north of Pittsburgh - part of the underground railroad route. It was hilly - I thought Whidbey had the corner on hills, but I was wrong! I really to appreciate what the HILLS are probably like for you!! Especially with weight on your bikes. So far, sounds like the trip is going very well! Lots of love and support from us on Whidbey. Carolyn and Cindy.
